Albert Turner was born in 1890 (Mildenhall Q1-1891 4A:774), son of Charlotte TURNER. It appears that his mother married in 1895 to Henry COE. 1891 census...Aged 4 months, he was at Chapel Road with his grandfather John TURNER [77] shepherd born Fordham; his grandmother Charlotte [73] born Stuntney; his mother Charlotte TURNER [35] single, born Fordham (deaf and dumb); his brother George [6] born Mildenhall. 1901 census...Aged 11, he was at Woollard's Yard, West Row with his widowed grandmother, his mother, now Charlotte COE and brother George (farm labourer). Henry COE, believed to be his stepfather, was boarding with the TAYLOR family at Rolfe's Yard, The Green, West Row. 1911 census...Aged 20, a farm labourer, he was at West Row with his brother George (gardener); mother Charlotte COE and grandmother Charlotte TURNER [92]. Both men now recorded as born in West Row. Mother Charlotte's husband seems to have been Henry COE, who was still boarding with the TAYLOR family. The pension card has Mrs SCARROW,of 50 Farm West Row, guardian of un-named illegitimate child [27-7-1918]. This was apparently Gladys Doris SCARROW. Lily Emma NICHOLAS married Albert SCARROW of Freckenham in 915 and he was killed on the 1st July 1916 on the Somme. after which Lily moved to Ferry Corner, West Row |

Enlisted in Newmarket. The war diary is very sketchy at that time, but little can have been happening since Albert was their only death that day. The battalion were in the Royal Naval Division, who were holding the Flesqueries salient at the time. That sector was flooded with gas for weeks before the German Spring Offensive to weaken them prior to the attack to their south.
